Lessons From the Child
Stronger Than Me
You’re only six years old
but I know that you’ll be stronger than me

That you need challenges to make you grow
is no secret; you’ll need pad-locked gates across your path
to strengthen your resolve, fortify your courage,
obstacles to teach you to climb life’s fences

They’ll gather your senses to conquer challenges
you cannot see or even begin to understand -
building, testing your endurance for future marathons
through wet sands of manhood and spirituality

So I try to think of things
you do not want to do,
looking for reluctance in your steps -
opportunities to encourage you to confront your fears, build your strength

But I cannot recall that there is anything
that you have been afraid to try
No monster you’ve feared to confront -
Only I, being hesitant for you in the background

Your conversation does not resemble my prayers,
your prayers not yet fashioned after my
subtle hints to the Father to cut my locks - alter my obstacles,
to dilute my chances for strengthened resolve

So as I wait, considering you like Job
searching for opportunities to assign you strength
I’m made to see you through different eyes

A vision of new hope for my own resolve
while I too am being strengthened
for future marathons that I cannot even begin to comprehend
